Winter Edition is a unique, intensive program in free music improvisation.

In 2012, we offer two innovative, week-long workshops:

Fundamentals
is for musicians with little or no experience in improvisation. Led by Cesar Lerner, it focuses on developing strong and flexible rhythm as the basis for exploring melody, harmony and finding one's own individual style. It is also aimed at more experienced improvisers who want to become both more flexible and anchored.

Advanced is for experienced improvisers who are ready to delve deeply into two topics:
i) conducted orchestral improvisation, led by
Marcelo Moguilevsky, and ii) spontaneous group composition, led by Alan Bern. It is aimed at participants of previous Winter Edition advanced workshops and at anyone who already improvises quite freely in any musical language.

One of the things that makes
Winter Edition special is its holistic philosophy of learning, which emphasizes the connections among music, communication, awareness and the body. Feldenkrais practitioner Michael Schründer leads daily sessions and contributes his perspective gained from more than 20 years as a professional Feldenkrais practitioner to the team teaching in both workshops.

Program director, Dr. Alan Bern, welcomes back to
Winter Edition in 2012 Marcelo Moguilevsky and Cesar Lerner, master musicians, composers, and teachers from Buenos Aires. Individually and in their work together as the Lerner & Moguilevsky Duo, they have earned an international reputation for taking the art of improvisation to new levels of nuance, communication and expressive power. Together with students from all around the world, we create a learning community in an atmosphere of trust and mutual support that allows us to take new risks and move beyond familiar comfort zones.

A note to all classical musicians who might be a little skeptical or unsure: Improvisation is not a special technique or a trick! It is a fundamental ability that can transform how you understand and perceive all music. Even if you never improvise publicly (and who knows?), studying improvisation can give you surprising insights into composed works and help you discover your own, uniquely individual interpretations of them. For many centuries, improvisation was a standard part of the training for every classical musician, and the recognition that it is essential to a complete musical education is spreading throughout the world again today. It is never too soon or too late to begin!
