Estill Level One with Tom Burke (New York)
January 27-29 (arrive January 26/maximum 20 participants)
Participants in Winter Edition 2009 and Yiddish Summer 2009 experienced first-hand the phenomenal practical and theoretical contributions Tom Burke made to those workshops. Out of those workshops grew the exciting idea to establish a home for the teaching of Estill technique in Weimar. Now you don’t have to fly to New York or London to be trained in this unique analytical and practical approach to understanding and using the voice. Starting in Winter Edition 2010, Tom brings his great teaching skills and wide-ranging creative spirit to Weimar to offer a sequence of courses leading up to certification as an Estill teacher. Beyond this goal, we are working to apply Estill insights to traditional singing styles from all around the world as well as to instrumental technique. For that reason, participants in this workshop will also join the Improvisation I: Intro/Review workshop for part of each day (see below).
Tom’s description of the goals of this workshop follows: The Estill Voice Training System Level One: Figures for Voice™ teaches control of 13 vocal structures that influence voice quality with an emphasis on physical sensation and Most Comfortable Vocal Effort. Each Figure employs exercises that reveal new vocal options and effects. After becoming familiar with each Figure, participants will be given the opportunity to apply their new skills to repertoire in small group practice sessions and open coaching. We will work on applying these techniques to your text and song. During this workshop you will learn tools for vocal problem solving, preventing and recovering from vocal injury, projecting the voice, singing in a variety of styles, and analyzing voice qualities.
