Beyond the comfort zone, with Cesar Lerner & Marcelo Moguilevsky (Buenos Aires), Tom Burke (New York), Tcha Limberger (Romania) and Alan Bern (Berlin)
January 31 – February 7 (arrive January 30/maximum 40 participants)

During this session we will continue the innovative experimental approach we began during Winter Editions 2008 and 2009, exploring the connections between improvisation, awareness, the voice and the body. Alan Bern, Cesar Lerner and Marcelo Moguilevsky, will go deeper into the theory and practice of conducted, solo and small group improvisation, with special attention to harmony and rhythm. The point of departure out of our “comfort zones” will be Tcha Limberger’s Roma and Manouche vocal repertoire and style, the first time that a non-Yiddish music has such a central role in a Weimar workshop. Tom Burke will contribute his unique synthesis of Estill technique, Laban dance theory and other body awareness disciplines to our developing theory of improvisation. This workshop is for professional and advanced instrumentalists and vocalists who are open and ready to be part of an innovative and highly challenging exploration of our deep musical selves.

PLEASE NOTE! Because Improvisation II builds on the work of Winter Edition 2008 and 2009, this workshop is open only to past participants of the 2008 or 2009 workshops OR to participants in the 2010 Improvisation I: Intro/Review Workshop (see above). OR for those who already have experience in the specific approaches we will pursue during Improvisation I & II. Please contact Alan Bern at uravreml(at)aol.com well in advance if you have any questions about this, thank you!
