Improvisation 2
with Michael Schründer, Isabelle Marx, Tcha Limberger, Alan Bern & Tom Burke
January 30 - February 6
at: Ottmar Gerster Musikschule (Karl-Liebknecht-Str. 1)

In recent years, Winter Edition has established an original set of concepts and practices centered around music improvisation, emphasizing the development of creativity, awareness and communication, and focusing less on refining musical craft. But in music improvisation and all other kinds of artistic action, we rely not only following the creative impulse, but also on the means we use to follow it, in other words, on resources of craft.

In keeping with the theme of this year's Winter Edition,
Techné: Craft & Creativity, the 2011 Improvisation 2 workshop focuses on bringing more craft in the form of harmonic, melodic and especially rhythmic awareness to the music improvisation methods we've developed so far. These include Real-Time Composition (continuous duos/trios, calibration and mirroring, single note and ostinato exercises), Conducted Improvisation (both as a player and a conductor), and other kinds of solo and ensemble improvisation. This workshop therefore builds on the work of past Winter Edition workshops (and the 2011 Improvisation 1 workshop) and adds exciting new resources to expand and deepen spontaneous musicianship.

As always, the workshop will be led by a great team of artists and teachers with many years of experience and their own individual approaches to intergrating creativity and craft. In addition to the Winter Edition program director Alan Bern and veteran favorites Tcha Limberger and Isabelle Marx, Michael Schründer joins the team to lead daily, intensive sessions of TaKeTiNa and Feldenkrais, linking these two powerful and inspiring methods to develop deep, practical knowledge of rhythm rooted in the body (please click here for his description of both and his thoughts about how they connect to the creative work of music improvisation). The team is rounded out by master vocal coach Tom Burke, who will join the workshop for the first days. This workshop is for advanced instrumentalists and vocalists with Winter Edition experience who are ready to take the next steps in and beyond their comfort zones.

PLEASE NOTE!
To participate in this workshop, it is necessary to have completed an Improvisation workshop in past Winter Editions, OR to have completed the 2011 Improvisation I Workshop, OR for those who already have enough experience in the specific approaches to music improvisation taught in Winter Edition. Please contact Alan Bern at alan.bern@othermusic.eu well in advance if you have any questions about this, thank you!
