Dr. Alan Bern (Berlin; piano/accordion)
founder and program director of Yiddish Summer Weimar and Winter Edition, Co-founder and Chairperson of other music e.V. and leader of BRAVE OLD WORLD, Alan Bern is considered one of the finest pianists, accordionists and composers in Jewish music today. He is the creator and leader of such highly regarded projects as The Other Europeans and Diaspora Redux, and he also performs with Bern, Brody & Rodach and the Klucevsek/Bern Duo. Bern is also renowned as an educator and cultural organiser. His compositions, including several for contemporary dance, have received awards in the USA, Europe and Israel. In 2006, he earned a doctorate degree in Music Composition at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati (USA). In 2009, he was received the Ruth Lifetime Achievement Award by the Dance and Folk Festival of Rudolstadt (TFF Rudolstadt).
A native of Bloomington, Indiana, he lived for many years in Boston and Brooklyn and has been based in Berlin since 1987.
