© Tino Sieland			Othermusic Für mich war die Teilnahme am Othermusic Workshop 2007 eine riesige Bereicherung. Nur aus Interesse schnupperte ich bei einem Dozentenkonzert hinein und war wie weggeblasen. So etwas hatte ich noch nie gehört. Ich entschloss mich dann die noch restlichen Tage an einem Kurs Teil zu nehmen. Und das hat sich gelohnt. Ich lernte viele verschiedene Arten mit Musik umzugehen kennen und traf viele tolle Menschen, mit denen sich über die letzten 5 jahre eine tolle und gegenseitig befruchtende Zusammenarbeit ergeben hat. Paul Brody, der damals einen Kurs und eine Band leitete spielt seit 2008 bei Clueso und meinem Trio. Es lohnt sich immer die Augen und Ohren offen zu halten und nach schöner neuer Inspiration zu suchen. Die Othermusic Workshops sind für mich eine riesige Sammlung an Inspirationsquellen. Nicht zuletzt die behutsame und Intelligente Art mit der Alan Bern die Kurse und das gesamte Festival leite, brachten mir eine neue Dimension von Künsterischem schaffen nahe. For me, participating in the 2007 other music workshop was a huge enrichment. Just out of curiosity, I checked out the faculty concert and it just blew me away! I'd never heard anything like that before. I decided right then to participate in the rest of the workshop, and it was really worth it. I learned a lot of different approaches to music and met many cool people with whom I've kept up a great and productive musical exchange for the last 5 years. Paul Brody, who was teaching a class and directing a band then, has played with Clueso and my trio since 2008. It's always worth it to keep your eyes and ears open and search for new inspiration. The Other Music workshops offer me a huge source of new inspirations. Last but not least, the caring and intelligent way that Alan Bern directs the workshops and the whole festival brought me close to a new dimension of artistic work. Christoph Bernewitz Guitarist of Clueso & Band and leader of Bernewitz Trio ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// Die Methode, die Alan Bern ausgearbeitet hat, um zu unterstützen, Improvisieren zu lernen oder zu vertiefen, hat eine große Wirkung. Einerseits wird musikalisches Vokabular fürs Improvisieren aktiviert und aus dem eigenen Potential erschlossen, andererseits werden improvisatorische Elemente geübt und vertieft, ohne den Charakter der Improvisation als offenes musikalische Geschehen zu verfälschen. Seine Arbeitsweise in kleinen Schritten, mit begrenzten Spielern, in ausgesuchten und fokussierten musikalischen Aufgaben kann von Anfang an Orientierung geben und zur Improvisation anregen. Aber auch erfahrene MusikerInnen profitieren davon, indem sie schon gewonnene Spielweisen genauer erforschen und ihren Horizont erweitern. Ich bin darüber hinaus sehr beeindruckt von der Art und Weise, wie Alan die Gruppenarbeit angeleitet hat und welchen geistigen Horizont seine Arbeit auftut. The method developed by Alan Bern to learn or deepen the ability to improvise music is highly effective. On the one hand, it draws out each musician's own potential vocabulary for musical improvisation. On the other hand, it offers an exact way to practice and master the elements of improvisation without falsifying the essential nature of improvisation as an open-ended musical process. His step-by-step approach, using specific, focused musical exercises right from the start with a small group of participants, offers a clear structure and motivation for learning improvisation. But experienced musicians can also benefit from this approach, which enables a more precise understanding and at the same time broadens horizons. In addition, I'm very impressed with the way Alan teaches a group and the intellectual horizons that open up as a result.
